So YSST kicked off this week and I must say I was pleasantly surprised! Not that the episode was good -- all signs pointed to this project looking pretty damn good -- but that it actually left me excited to see what the fuck is happening. Also that it raises Many Questions[tm] if you've been around the block for decades but kicks off in such a way that watching it without having seen YST is fine, which is good.

Nasti being right there is also Good and lol props to Sunrise for keeping her under wraps right up until just as (after?) the first episode aired, lolololol --

Hopefully it can keep up as it began. It's absolutely seriously not taking itself seriously, except when it does, which is everything I could ask for in a start.

~~one growing suspicion I had over the promo months panned out (and how!), I wonder about the bigger red-string-and-pins suspicion even more now ...~~

Meanwhile in a continued Series Of Sure Coincidences Lolsobwhat, I decided to shell out and get me an omg.lol account the same day Denise started screeching about LJ's imminent demise (and not not~ long after Denise annoyed the fuck out of me wrt Dreamwidth, last month); now the day I activated my account on omg.lol's irc server, Discord is preparing to go public and is filing for a public offering.

Well, a major reason I was interested in omg.lol specifically was its irc (and other similar things), so time to dig around even more and prepare I suppose --

Whether waiting for Neatnik to finish its webhosting plans to go along with omg.lol or finally getting around to Neocities or Nekoweb or something, I need to get on with that. Maybe I can even pull it off before the year is over? Maybe?

I'm gonna take the YSST win, though. Yep.

Занятно сравнить Вики-статьи «Дюссельдорфская школа живописи» на разных языках. Но ещё занятнее сравнить подбор картинок. Сами немцы выбирают в первую очередь образцы высокого жанра, иконы, исторические и бытовые сюжеты, много! а уж потом всё остальное. И даже список художников-дюссельдорфцев в немецкой статье классифицирован и, тксть, иерархизирован по жанрам, т.е. начат с высокого, с представителей исторической-религиозной-мифологической живописи, а пейзажисты задвинуты в самый хвост. И их вдвое меньше числом, чем иконописцев и «историков».

Французы же, англичане и прочие итальянцы представляют более-менее сбалансированный эгалитаристский набор, не забывают портретов и натюрмортов.

Но русскоязычная статья вывешивает четыре пейзажа против четырёх жанровых картин. Три из которых, простихосподи, - американские.

Я на стопроцентов уверена, что это из-за Шишкина. Русский менталитет видит всю Дюссельдорфскую школу – сквозь Шишкина.

Добавлю, кстати, что Вики-статья про Трёх Медведей существует на двадцати семи языках, среди которых нет немецкого.

Из моей коллекции скромное произведение карманнейшего формата, 7 х 10, но как трогательна судьба автора.

Норберт Хейлбрук, потомственный художник и гравёр из Брюгге, родился в 1700 и занимался гравёрным и медальерным ремеслом. В двадцать шесть лет он был арестован и всего через каких-то четыре года осуждён как фальшивомонетчик. В те грубые времена за такие дела давали вышку, но эрцгерцогиня Мария Елизавета Австрийская, в то время штатгальтер(-ша) Нидерландов, меценаткою будучи, помиловала художника, заменив повешение на пожизненное заключение с выводом на работу с правом работать по специальности в городе Генте. После чего он продолжал гравировать и медальерить, даже вступил в соответствующую гильдию и добился перевода обратно в Брюгге, пока снова (не покидая тюрьмы) не погорел по той же статье в 1755 году. Тут уж его сослали (продолжать сидеть) куда Макар телят не гонял, а именно — в Брюссель. Где он и скончался в 1762, продолжив, кстати, династию. Сын его, тоже Норбер, сделался живописцем. Судя по дате рождения Норбера-младшего, он был зачат уже в пожизненном заключении.

Я смотрю на этот малый кораблик, борющийся с волнами. Тридцать восемь лет за решёткой!

Но, с другой стороны, никто у него не отнимал ни жены, ни любимой работы.

It it Already Wednesday and that means it's WIP WEDNESDAY!!

Haven't done the game in a hot minute but I'd like to lean into it this year to see if it helps my writing goals at all. Except I think I want to try actually posting on Wednesdays. Y'know, since it's in the name and all. I obviously haven't asked for any prompts, so I hit the button on a random word generator until it gave me something I could find in my drafts.

Now that's posted, the floor is open for prompts for next week! I don't think right off that I've had any new friends here since the last time I did this but just in case, I'll go over the rules again. They are very simple! Give me a word-- or a few words-- and I'll search my drafts. If I find any of the prompt words, I'll post an excerpt that includes them. If I don't, I have to write something new using the same prompt or prompts.

And since we're already here-- tell me what you're working on! Writing, crafting, home projects, etc!

Challenge #4 Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I love the Transformers fan wiki. It was a huge help when I was first getting back into Transformers, especially as I was completely new to the comic book universe that brought me back, and I love being introduced through it to parts of the brand I didn't know about. The site and community have their issues but it's a painstaking passionate project and even if I wasn't into Transformers at all, I'd still admire that.

Easily my most visited page, though, is the list of female transformers. Which, tbh, I have mixed feelings about. Because, yeah, having a page dedicated to listing the femformers does inherently other them. You won't find an equivalent page for the fellas. But on the other hand, the ladies by and large get paid dirt by both canon and fandom. So, until such time that they're treated equally, don't they deserve to be spotlighted in even this small way? Especially when so many of them are so obscure and could be so easily overlooked otherwise. I see fans all the time, in more or less good faith, shrug off the lack of legacy female characters because, well, you can count the number of female transformers on one hand and still flip off Hasbro, right? So, having an easy way to point to the several hundred existing female characters is nice. Besides that, I have a female-focused Transformers prompts blog on Tumblr and I get a lot of inspiration just from looking at them all listed out.

Jon buys lunch in the office cafeteria while Sarah tries to help

Jon hands his sandwich to the cashier, leaning on his crutch with his forearm (I need practice drawing that - it's mostly obscured here, though) while Sarah stands by him holding a bottle of Coke.

"Can I carry your stuff?" Sarah asks too eagerly.

"Hold on, Sarah," Jon says.

"How 'bout this Coke? I'll carry this Coke," she insists.

They head to one of the tables, Sarah clutching the Coke and staring awkwardly as Jon shuffles with some effort to their destination.

Then they're seated, and Jon relaxes and smiles a bit. "Okay, lunchtime. Just in time for break to end."

"It's all right. They'll understand," says Sarah.

"You don't have an excuse," says Jon.

"Good point! Here's your Coke! Gotta go!" Sarah hands him the bottle.

It's a wintry mix day here, more ice than snow. School was delayed, but it was only worse when the guys left. Now it's looking a little better. It's amusing how they still yell at each other to look at the time, don't forget this, did you check that, even with 2 hours' delay. But we all do that, I suppose. It's not about what time the clock reads. It's about how much time you give yourself between starting to get ready, and needing to go.

Guilty as well!

The hawthorn tree is alive with birds. I didn't buy any birdseed this winter because we had a bumper crop of acorns and hawthorn berries, and I piled a lot of the grasses and flowers that had gone to seed in the back to make a dead hedge, and it's a lot. Hopefully enough. In a sense, I'm not sure I want to entice wildlife to my yard, because my neighbors rely on chemicals to keep their lawns golf course quality, and it leaks onto my property on both sides. But I think the hawthorns are safe to eat, at least.

Slowly getting used to the new status quo at work. They've actually given me a helper! She's pretty new and so can't work that fast and I have to check all her cases for now but obviously that'll change with time. And it's a little slow coming back from New Year's so this is the time for that sort of thing.

And! Guess what? She likes Transformers too!

Jon is taking his lunch break at his new job. I suppose he's been bringing his lunch and eating at his desk every day so far, so he won't have to make the effort to walk down the hall on crutches and take the elevator to the cafeteria. But he's doing it this time.

When he arrives at the cafeteria double doors, he pauses to catch his breath, and wonders if it was worth it to come here. Probably not. But then Sarah, the mainframe technician we met briefly in an earlier scene, throws open the doors. "Jon! Hi! Let me get that for you," she gushes, and invites him to sit with her.

I've done numerous scenes where Jon is taking his time going places or performing tasks, and we all get to watch his slow progress, panel by panel. Sometimes, he's in the background while other characters do things in the foreground. I have one scene, not in the book or the daily comic but just for a feedback exercise, where it takes him 3 pages - that's about 16 panels - to pour himself a drink and sit down with it.

I had a friend in college who was disabled, and was extremely defensive about the pace at which he operated. Well, I say 'a friend' but we only hung out a few times. He had the hots for me, and I didn't reciprocate because I was dating the custodian, and then he found a girlfriend and we kinda never saw each other again. But that's neither here nor there. The thing I found interesting was the whole concept of living your life at your own speed. Especially because Jon has three speeds! Racing speed, limping speed, and a complete standstill.

The speed of his personality adjusts to the speed of his body. I wonder if anyone ever noticed that? While he's never extremely outgoing, when he's in his good wheelchair, his personality gets stronger. So even though he's pretty sensitive to the general cultural attitude that being in a wheelchair isn't a good thing compared to not being disabled, he certainly feels better when he's in it.

Challenge #3

Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

Dear Transformers fandom,

Oh, dear, dear Transformers fandom. Truly, your eyes are nothing like the sun and your lips are not the red of coral. And the less said about your breasts, the better. And yet, do I love you any less?

And what I love most about you is your breadth. Your variety. Perhaps it isn't always to my liking but that just goes to show how many things you can be. For as frustrated as I can be sometimes by your homogeneity in the face of four decades of multitude continuities, every one of those continuities is in you. Whether it's a matter of different generations growing up with different pieces of media or new fans being introduced into this world by any one of them or some little bit of micro-nonsense that, for some reason, meant something to someone. You may recycle the same jokes and the make a hodgepodge of disparate stories so that they become one indistinct glob but you also pick the tiniest details out of obscurity. You grab at characters who hardly have character to speak of and you say, Yes, this one. This is the one. You oversaturate every platform with the same handful of ships, yes, but you also put characters together in combinations that expand my mind into dimensions hitherto unimagined by science or philosophy. You are old and vast and I could stumble lost for a lifetime through your monotony but within the same spaces I'll also find your esoterica, the love even one individual has for the most unloved piece of canon.

Who am I to focus on the rough when there are so many diamonds sparkling around me, reflecting the light of my own passion?

(Just, uh, maybe a little more of that for the ladies? Please and thanks a lot, okay, love you, bye~)

Ren abd Alex make a pizza date and Alex is inordinately excited

"So, you wanna... get a beer later?" Alex asks Ren as they continue walking through campus from yesterday.

"I don't drink," Ren replies, frowning. He's a self-proclaimed teetotaler. That's a whole story. "Sorry, Alex."

"No problem. We could go for coffee," says Alex.

"I don't dr--" Ren hesitates and kinda grins at Alex, realizing how difficult he sounds and trying a more agreeable tack. "How 'bout pizza? Trattoria is near my digs."

"Pizza? Already?!" Alex looks doubtful. "Kinda moving fast."

"Just a suggestion," Ren says.

"Let's do it! See you at, 6 maybe?" Alex is moving down another path now, turning around to shout his decision at Ren.

Ren grins over his shoulder. "Sure!" And then smirks slightly to himself as he hears Alex exclaim, "Haha! Wow!" behind him.

Ren is in for a couple of surprises, I think! But don't worry; I won't be following any tired old tropes. You know me and tropes! While I'm not afraid of them, I like to play with them. I don't follow tropes; tropes follow me.

Should I go into the teetotaler thing here? We've recently learned that Ren and his family are Quakers. That's not strictly true. They have a family history of being Quakers, and if anyone asks Ren while he's in the mood to talk about it, he'll claim to be one presently. But they've had some drama with the Quaker community in their area. Among the problems that came up was that Ren's brother Sig, who is 17 years older than Ren, enlisted in the US Army and didn't put 'Society of Friends' on his papers, so he got sent into combat. Their parents were furious, but Sig held his ground, and later came back with PTSD. And developed first a drinking habit, then a heroin habit. In fact, he brought the heroin market to the community.

We only catch a glimpse of Sig in the graphic novel; he's in the background at Ren's house at Christmas. We spend more time with Sig's son Jordan, who is close in age to Ren and who even comes to France for the wedding later. So there's been a lot of healing, rehab, and mending fences by then. It's not perfect. Sig appears a lot more in the flashback scenes I've done, because he was a looming presence in Ren and Maurice's childhood.

And that's why Ren doesn't drink.

That doesn't cover the coffee problem, though. That's not so dramatic. Ren just doesn't like coffee.
